Watches

Charterhouse hold four specialist jewellery, watch and silver auctions per year which are always very well attended by both members of the public and the trade, ensuring constant impressive results and a very high selling rate.

The market is currently very strong for all types of sports and complicated wristwatches. Our specialist has over 30 years of experience in the field and is fully conversant with all types of pocket or wristwatch, whether it be an 18th century pair cased verge pocket watch, an early 20th century Waltham pocket watch, a 1960s Rolex Submariner or a modern complicated Patek Philippe wristwatch.

Valuations for auction, probate, family division or insurance can be carried out in-house, at a client’s home for larger collections or at a safe deposit facility.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run-up to an auction, we receive 100s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale. Attached to these email replies, we regularly send well over 1,000 digital images, such is the huge interest generated in our auctions.

Three Swatch Watches Valued at over £20,000

The first Charterhouse auction of the New Year on Friday 2nd January includes three Swatch watches estimated to sell for over £20,000.

“I have always liked Swatch watches.” Commented Richard Bromell. “I bought my first Swatch watch in 1990 but it was thrown away a long time ago.”

The name ‘Swatch’ is a contraction of ‘Second Watch’ was coined by founder Nicolas Hayek as it sounded fun and casual, just like the watches they made.

All three watches were given to the Charterhouse vendor, an International jet-setter who now enjoys a slower pace of life in Somerset, directly by Swatch 40 years ago.

First is a Kiki Picasso designed watch estimated at £8,000-12,000. One of just 120 Swatch watches given to eminent guests in 1985 at the French Institute for Research and Co-ordination in Acoustics and Music function at the Pompidou Centre, Paris this is one of the most sought after Swatch watches ever made.

This is followed by two Andrew Logan designed Jellyfish Swatch watches. From an edition of just 50 copies, they releases at the 1985 Alternative Miss World sponsored by Swatch. These fish shaped watches, set with precious stones, are estimated at £7,000-9,000 each.

Viewing for the auction at The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne starts on Monday 29th December or on charterhouse-auction.com where live internet bidding is available.
