The first Charterhouse auction of the New Year on Friday 2nd January includes three Swatch watches estimated to sell for over £20,000.
“I have always liked Swatch watches.” Commented Richard Bromell. “I bought my first Swatch watch in 1990 but it was thrown away a long time ago.”
The name ‘Swatch’ is a contraction of ‘Second Watch’ was coined by founder Nicolas Hayek as it sounded fun and casual, just like the watches they made.
All three watches were given to the Charterhouse vendor, an International jet-setter who now enjoys a slower pace of life in Somerset, directly by Swatch 40 years ago.
First is a Kiki Picasso designed watch estimated at £8,000-12,000. One of just 120 Swatch watches given to eminent guests in 1985 at the French Institute for Research and Co-ordination in Acoustics and Music function at the Pompidou Centre, Paris this is one of the most sought after Swatch watches ever made.
This is followed by two Andrew Logan designed Jellyfish Swatch watches. From an edition of just 50 copies, they releases at the 1985 Alternative Miss World sponsored by Swatch. These fish shaped watches, set with precious stones, are estimated at £7,000-9,000 each.
