A rare George II double gold guinea coin is estimated at £2,000-3,000 in the Charterhouse two day specialist auction of coins, medals, stamps toys and collector’s items at their Sherborne Salerooms on the 20th & 21st August.

“The market for coins continues to remain strong and we have recently had some great results for coin collections.” Commented Richard Bromell. “Having been involved with collecting coins for over 50 years, this is the first double guinea I have had the pleasure to see and am sure it will be the first time for many other collectors.”

18th century guineas are scare to find but rarely do double guineas appear for sale. With a double guinea being £2 2 shillings, this coin was a large chunk of change in 1740 when a loaf of bread was just a penny.

Whilst it is not recorded how many double guineas were minted in 1740, it would have been very low due to its high worth.
