A group of World War II and other medals awarded to Sergeant Francis Mason are expected to sell for well over £1,000 in the Charterhouse auction of collectors items in Sherborne on Friday 17th March. “Francis Mason was not only awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, but also a Military Medal for bravery in the field which is quite a scarce gallantry award with just over 15,000 such medals awarded in the Second World War “. Commented Richard Bromell. “As a soldier in The Royal Artillery, he served in India before the Second World War. During the war, he was taken as a Prisoner of War and afterwards he enrolled as a Yeoman Warder’s of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London in 1951, which we usually just refer to as a Beefeater, a position he held until 1972 “The medals, estimated at £1,000-1,500, are being entered into the Charterhouse auction from his family who live in Kent.
