A Second World War group of medals are estimated to sell for up to £2,000 when they go under the Charterhouse hammer in their auction of collectors’ items in March. “It is the first time this wonderful fighting Military Medal group has come onto the market as it is offered for auction by a close family member. ” Commented Richard Bromell. “The Military Medal was awarded to NCO’s and men of the Army for individual acts of bravery, with some 115,600 awarded in the First World War and just over 15,000 in the Second World War, making them very sought after by collectors today. “Corporal Jack Clarke served with The Royal Irish Fusiliers and was awarded the Military Medal for his leadership during an attack against the enemy in Italy during 1943. The Platoon Commander and Sergeant were both seriously wounded, and Corporal Clarke, although himself wounded by shrapnel and in pain, took over the Platoon. By his personal example and leadership, he kept them together under the extremely heavy fire brought down on them and took the men forward until they had to stop due to the lack of ammunition. Only then did he allow himself to be helped back.The medals come to auction framed with a photograph of Jack Clarke along with other items he collected during the war, and are estimated at £1,500-2,000.Charterhouse is now accepting entries for this forthcoming auction of militaria, medals, coins, stamps, postcards, clocks, watches and other collectors’ items on Friday 18th March.
