Two medieval illuminated manuscripts, identified as being late 19th century or even early 20th century fakes attributed to The Spanish Forger, are being sold by Charterhouse in Sherborne Thursday 25th June where they could sell for thousands of pounds.

“I must admit it is not very often we auction forgeries, but in this case, we have made an exception as The Spanish Forger is now highly collected in his own right.” Commented Richard Bromell.

The Spanish Forger duped collectors, museums and institutions into buying his medieval forgeries for many years.

Known as The Spanish Forger, there is some doubt about his nationality, and some think he could be French, although the name has stuck.

The Spanish Forger’s works were subject to an exhibition at the Morgan Library, New York City, in 1978. More recently, in 2009, the Victoria & Albert Museum purposely acquired five works by The Spanish Forger for their collection for what it tells us about perceptions of the late 19th century.
