A 17th century Dutch oil painting of a kitchen maid, found in a Somerset tannery near Crewkerne, is estimated to sell for £6,000 in the Charterhouse auction of pictures and books in Sherborne on 3rd July.

“We were asked by the family to help clear a home for the family and one of the buildings was an old tannery.” Commented John Snape. “The tannery had been used as a workshop and store over the years, so the last thing I was expecting to find was a 17th century old master painting leaning against a wall.”

Painted on a panel by Willem Van Odekerken it is of a kitchen maid and has survived in generally good condition.

Estimated at £4,000-£6,000 the painting is being sold by Charterhouse on Thursday 3rd July in their picture & books auction, followed on Friday 4th July with antiques & interiors and the Jo Burt collection of rock memorabilia.
